Drug companies generally hold only one patent per drug. Tech firms (Microsoft, Intel, Apple, etc) generally hold several patents (and/or violate several) per product offering. Ergo, when someone says “Hey! You can’t use that! It was mine first!”, it’s in a tech company’s best interest to say “fine, here’s some money so I can KEEP using it – now shut up”. Drug companies, however, don’t have that luxury and they depend on their patents to save their proverbial hides from getting ripped off. I understand their plight, but I don’t care.
Drug companies, in case you didn’t know, are the reason there are no cures for Cancer, AIDS, and a variety of other modern-day “incurable” plagues. They’ll make you suffer for their obscene profit margins cause… hey, who doesn’t want another brand-new Mercedes in the garage? The money is in the treatment, not the cure. Until they’ve milked that plague-cow for all its worth – don’t expect a cure. Expect Pfizer stock to shoot for the stars until we’re all begging for intervention.
In essence, I support the idea of the lawsuit in question between EBay & MercExchange, but the devil’s in the details. Besides, they’re trying to patent “Buy It Now”? Ohgofuckyourself.
