5 is too little... it's hard to fit important metal acts into 5 spots.

now, I think the U.S. has produced the BEST and most important acts... I was never a fan of NWOBHM trend, I understand it influenced metallica, and therefor would make it and possibly maiden important.

I guess you'd have to define what important means to you a bit more, but I disagree that sales has anything to do with importance... unless of course you were profiting off of those sales.

for me, influence is importance... not sales, not popularity, not even talent.

so based on influence I'd exclude maiden... I just don't hear it.
I'm a HUGE (230lbs) fan of maiden and probably know the words to every song of every album up to Piece Of Mind.

I might add maiden to a top 10 list, but even there I'm not sure... I'm also doing this based on genre of metal music, excluding hair metal and other sub-sects of metal, like doom... and obviously NWOBHM.

so, I originally listed these bands on your facebook spot as the top 5 most important...

mayhem
black sabbath
venom
metallica
slayer

I then switched it to

black sab - start
mayhem - mod/extreme
venom - black metal
possessed - death
metallica - thrash

but my final 5 most important as in influence, not personal preference would be...

coven - start
pantera - modern
venom - black metal
possessed - death
metallica - thrash

now, among my personal favorite metal bands are slayer - but they are thrash, same time as metallica, just not as influential, there for not as important... I HATE what metallica became and hate to utter their name (they died with cliff burton), but it is what it is... black sabbath as well, I so LOVE sabbath, but Jinx from coven has made a great case for being ripped of by the sabbath crew and for that alone she wins - influence over popularity and even talent.

I'm glad you reminded me about pantera and agree - dime is one of the best if not the best... I know I consider the solo on pantera's domination the BEST metal solo ever.

also, I'm torn over possessed and the band death... not sure about that one and since I'm in repossessed I'm going with possessed.

I think Venom should be there. If Venom didn't exist there would not be Slayer or Metallica!
