AudioScrobbler plug
I don’t know if I’ve mentioned this before, but I found this about a month ago and I’m still really amused and impressed with it. Basically, you install a plug-in that runs in the background on your system and monitors your music listening patterns (through iTunes, WinAmp, etc) and then publishes them to a site with all kinds of interesting statistical information. I’m a freak for weird stats.
Anyway.. since I never turn my computer (or my iTunes app) off, this thing’s been playing pretty much constantly for the past month and I’m up to 4828 songs registered. Since I usually listen on "shuffle" mode in iTunes, there’s not much to be said for my listening patterns just yet - only how much of my music is split between the 7000+ songs in my playlist. Matt’s gonna dig the position of Tom Waits in the "overall top artists" list ;)
Amusing still, it didn’t used to update exactly how many times tracks were played in a given span of time. Last week, though, they updated their backend and included that new feature. This wouldn’t be an issue (not that it is now, it’s just funny) but now everyone can see just how mopey I was last week based on my top tracks for the week. The MC900ft Jesus track was played while I optimized my stereo settings - as in a really brainless moment I realized that since I bought my fancy new receiver just before moving into my apartment 9 months ago, I had it set to "Tone Direct" meaning all equalization was to be done through the device (my computer, in this case) and not the receiver. Turning off Tone Direct allowed me to fuck w/the built-in (and more preferrable) equalizer settings within the receiver itself… it’s like night and day now, and "If I Only Had A Brain" is a good song for calibrating that kinda shit. Trust me.
